Potensi Pengembangan Bio-Ethanol

Ketergantungan banyak negara terhadap bahan bakar fosil selama ini secara nyata telah memberikan dampak yang sangat serius pada ketersediaan energi sebagai penopang kelangsungan hidup manusia di muka bumi. Cadangan minyak bumi semakin menipis, sementara jika tidak hati-hati hal yang sama akan terjadi pada batu bara dan gas alam. Penggunaan bahan bakar fosil dengan produk turunan seperti premium, solar, minyak tanah dan batu bara mengakibatkan pemanasan global/global warming. Pembakaran bahan bakar fosil untuk di konversi menjadi energi listrik pada power plant menghasilkan emisi gas karbon yang bisa menimbulkan efek rumah kaca. Demikian juga asap kendaraan bermotor yang menggunakan bahan bakar seperti premium dan solar.

Menyadari akan dampak krisis energi dan pemanasan global, banyak negara mulai mengembangkan energi alternatif. Salah satu energi alternatif yang banyak dikembangkan adalah energi yang berbasis pada bahan bakar nabati yaitu bio-ethanol dan bio-diesel. Beberapa negara yang sukses mengembangkan bahan bakar bio-ethanol adalah :
1. Brazil : Menggunakan bahan baku tebu dengan produksi tahunan lebih dari satu milyar liter yang dihasilkan dari sekitar 320 pabrik ethanol. Brazil sudah menggunaan ethanol yang di campur dengan bensin (gasohol) sebagai bahan bakar otomotif dan mampu menekan polusi udara dengan menurunkan emisi gas Karbon Dioksida sebesar 18 persen.
2. AS : dengan produksi tahunan sebesar 10 milyar liter.

Negara lain yang tergolong mampu mengembankan bio-ethanol secara signifikan adalah China, India dan Perancis.

Potensi Indonesia untuk mengembangkan bio-ethanol sebenarnya sangat menjanjikan. Dengan berbagai macam tanaman yang bisa dijadikan bahan baku seperti tebu, jagung dan ketela pohon. Namun pengadaan lahan, pola tanam yang masih tradisional dan distribusi menjadi kendala. Untuk itu pemerintah perlu mengeluarkan regulasi yang lebih jelas dan lebih fokus serta konsisten dalam penerapannya, agar pengembangan energi alternatif dengan bahan bakar bio-ethanol bisa dimaksimalkan.
